4. (NBR007) - Cake, 2007-8
ceramic and salvaged factory detritus
5 element assemblage, largest component w. 57 cm, h. 30 cm

Glossary: Cake = Following the blending of measured ingredients for specific clay bodies, slip is transferred from the settling arks and sieved over a series of electro magnets to remove any possible contamination. The slip is then de-watered by being forced under pressure into a 'filter press', which contains a series of permeable fabric bags secured between metal frames. When no more slip can be pumped into the bags the press is disconnected and the thin slabs of plastic clay called 'cake' are removed and staked where it is later compressed and de-aired through a pugmill. The 'cake' is then prepared according to its differing requirements within each area of manufacture in the factory.
